The North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) is a global defense alliance based on the North Atlantic Treaty. The chairman of NATO is the Secretary General. His duties include managing the General Secretariat with the International Staff. He also takes over the chairmanship of the Nuclear Planning Group (NPG). In addition to enforcing decisions, he also has a representative function of the organization in public. The Secretary General must be unanimously elected by the other Member States. After his election, his term of office lasts four years with the possibility to extend to a fifth year.
